Axis between the two heirs to the throne in the decision to cut official ties with Elizabeth’s second son, involved in the Epstein case: “A question of survival of the monarchy at all costs”
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
LONDON – There is the hand of Carlo and William behind the immediate “dismissal” of Prince Andrew, de facto ousted from the royal family for the allegations of sexual violence that hang over his head: “It was a quick and ruthless decision, recommended by the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge and approved by the Queen, ”explained a source from Palazzo al Daily Mail. “It is a question of the survival of the monarchy at all costs: it has always been like this and it always will be ».
Carlo, shy “helmsman”
In the past, Prince Philip was the “helmsman” of the firm, as he himself called the royal family: the Duke of Edinburgh presided over the “war councils” during the crisis between Charles and Diana in the 1990s. But with his old age and finally with his passing, the role of “governor” of the Windsor house passed to Charles, obviously in agreement with the queen. The Prince of Wales has never made any secret of preferring one “streamlined” monarchy, which does without minor figures such as, for example, the princesses Beatrice and Eugenia, the daughters of Andrea: a direction of travel that had already caused the discontent of Elizabeth’s second son.
Carlo is known to have confronted Andrea face-to-face, who admitted his mistake in befriending pedophile tycoon Jeffrey Epstein, but continued to plead innocent on allegations of raping Virginia Roberts Giuffre. However, the Prince of Wales did not feel at all reassured by his brother’s words: but the heir to the throne is a shy character and averse to direct confrontations, so he was backed up by his son William.
William’s growing influence
The intervention of the Duke of Cambridge was decisive: he is a an increasingly active and influential member of the Windsor sanctum and the queen appreciates her decision-making, which reminds her of her beloved Philip. Furthermore, everyone is aware that the future of the monarchy rests on William’s shoulders more than on those of Charles, who will likely be a short king.
But the 39-year-old prince’s ace in the hole is his wife Kate: a bourgeois woman who keeps him with his feet on the ground and allows him not to be completely sucked into the real “bubble” and to have antennas capable of perceive the sensitivity of common opinion. William is also less romantically attached to the old guard and therefore had no hesitation in recommending “internal exile” for his uncle Andrea.
Script already tested
With the consent of Elizabeth, the script already tested with Harry and Meghan was then followed: “They made this decision to isolate the institution from all flying splinters – explained the royal source to the Mail -. The same pattern of separation from the Sussex follows: the removal of the titles means that now the monarchy can legitimately say it is not involved“.
For Elizabeth, it was particularly painful to punish what is unanimously considered hers favorite son: but as in all other dynastic-family crises, from Margaret onwards, the queen knows what is best for the monarchy and acts as ruler of the Crown, rather than as a sister or mother. All the more so now that she and the building are supported by a resolute William.
